A new era of dream science is here.
From lucid dreaming therapies for PTSD to targeted dream incubation (TDI) and targeted memory reactivation (TMR), researchers can now influence and even reshape the content and emotion of dreams.
Advances in AI-guided sleep staging, closed-loop neural stimulation, and two-way communication with the sleeping mind have revealed unprecedented access to cognition during sleep — including the ability to guide memory consolidation and even target forgetting.
At the same time, studies link chronic nightmares to shortened lifespan and cardiovascular strain, while controlled dream modulation under anesthesia and ketamine suggests new routes for trauma resolution and emotional resetting.
The field now faces its defining question: so what? In the midst of global mental health and social crises, how can we use these discoveries to heal — not just individuals, but communities? How can dreaming better, and dreaming more together, contribute to resilience, creativity, and empathy?
The MIT Dream Engineering Symposium gathers leading scientists, clinicians, engineers, and ethicists to chart the translation of dream engineering from the lab to the world — defining how this new science of sleep can become a force for collective well-being.
